New VW Beetle Happy Face Ad - Dare To Be Happy

In this month's Creative Review I noticed the new ad campaign for VW Beetle by Crispin Porter & Bogusky.



This is a good execution of a commonly recognised piece of anthropomorphology. There is nothing or revolutionary new about saying that the VW Beetle has a happy face. Anyone that has seen Herby Goes Bananas knows this! But the comparison of the Beetle face with the faces of 'evil' cars re-enforces the brand values of the Beetle to the demographic which will be likely to buy one.

I doubt any SUV's will release 'Dare to be aggressive' ad campaigns. Although Im sure that their drivers would find that added macho factor very appealing.

Dare to be happy.

This Weeks Faces: 24th May

Here are some more faces that I've seen out and about this week in Farringdon, the West End and Stoke Newington. These cheeky guys have helped to keep me happy in my adventures.

Facial recognition software used in Maddie hunt

Police are using facial recognition software in the hunt for the abducted girl Madeleine McCann.

This software is interesting because it can rapidly scan photos for faces, then correlate differences in nodal points on these faces against stored faces of known paedophiles.

I find this interesting because humans remember people's faces in a similar way. Rather than remember individual faces, we remember how peoples' faces differ from the standard face we have stored in our brain. This constant scanning for faces by our brains also leads us to see found faces in objects.

Lets hope that this latest line of enquiry is successful in helping to find Madeleine.

Eye on my shirt

This week I have been researching the Japanese 90's craze Meary. These were eye stickers that you could add to objects to give them personality. After scouring eBay for Meary to buy and weeks of dissapointment, I stumbled upon some fun googly eyes in Paperchase.



I decided that these eyes should be used for some philanthropy. As my cleaning lady Natasha comes along tomorrow I decided to make her job more fun.

I wouldn't like to be a cleaner, it combines my 2 least favourite activities of cleaning and tidying. One thing that would light up my day would be to work in houses with Henry brand vacuum cleaners. His anthropomorphised happy red face would make it feel like I had a fun-loving sunburnt baby elephant businessman helping me to tidy the house.

Henry doesn't live in my house. So I have left Natasha some cleaning friends to help her in the kitchen instead.







Anthropomorphology is fun!
